Support Request: SiteKiosk "Photos" screen saver doesn't work

Reproduction

Please see my comprehensive overview as well as file attachment.

Description

Dear Support,

I recently purchased and installed SiteKiosk 9.1.3345 onto a freshly built and patched Windows 8.1 desktop computer. The computer is an all-in-one HP touchscreen computer.

Attached is a copy of our SiteKiosk configuration file and log files.

SiteKiosk is configured for Auto Start under the restricted SiteKiosk user account.

We use the photos screen saver with pictures stored under C:\Users\SiteKiosk\Pictures. The screen saver previews correctly.

When the screen saver activates it briefly displays the first photo before exiting back to the SiteKiosk browser (Chrome engine). This describes the same issue I'm seeing - http://www.provisio.com/CustomerSupportCenter/ArticleDetails.aspx?ArticleID=20478#

About 1 out of 5 or so activations will see the screen saver work correctly.

The SiteKiosk Player screen saver seems to work without an issue.

System Security Manager was initially configured for Protected mode, then switched to Customized mode to allow access to net.exe and shutdown.exe.

Please advise on what course of action we should take to resolve this issue.

Hello,

Generally you first may check if there is a difference in “Run once” mode
and that the Windows Photos screen saver also works correctly outside of the SiteKiosk browser while logged in as SiteKiosk user (used in “Auto Start” mode).

Here the information about how to get access:
http://www.provisio.com/en-US/CustomerSupportCenter/ArticleDetails.aspx?ArticleID=5826

Unfortunately the SiteKiosk configuration file and log files were not attached.
Can you please send them via e-mail to
support-europe(at)provisio.com (referring to this post).

Dear Support,

The issue occurs both in "Run Once" mode when logged in as an administrator, and also occurs when using "Auto Start" mode as the SiteKiosk user.

As a test, I tried turning off "Access/Security\Block system critical windows & dialog boxes" and also set "System Security Manager" to "Unprotected" mode. Neither setting helped and both have been reinstated.

I have emailed our SiteKiosk configuration file and log files as a zip attachment to support-europe(at)provisio.com.

Hello,

Thank you for sending the files. We were able to reproduce that behavior and I forwarded it to our developers to fix it for a future SiteKiosk version.

Currently you have 2 options for a workaround:
1. If you still want to use Chrome Browser Skin use “SiteKiosk Player” for displaying pictures.
The benefit of this is also that the settings are not user dependent (in opposite to Windows screensavers).
2. You switch to Metro IE Skin (Internet Explorer based skin) and continue using the Windows Photos screensaver.

Hi,

In response to your suggested workarounds:

"1. If you still want to use Chrome Browser Skin use “SiteKiosk Player” for displaying pictures."

I have tried resizing a set of images to match the screen resolution and found the SiteKiosk Player appears to use its own resolution as the images are only partly displayed and off centre. What resolution do I need to use for the pictures to fit nicely on a 1920 x 1080 screen?

Also, during testing, when using the SiteKiosk Player, I have found it will sometimes display a black screen instead of file://c:\users\SiteKiosk\Pictures\image.jpg. Is it likely a correct image resolution will address this issue or is the SiteKiosk Player unreliable with Chrome as well?

"2. You switch to Metro IE Skin (Internet Explorer based skin) and continue using the Windows Photos screensaver."

I had considered switching to Metro IE but found there's no obvious way to remove the country flag from the top right corner of the screen i.e. the flag associated with the language(s) used. We are based in Australia but only have the option of using a USA flag when using the English language. Can this be changed or hidden?

Hello,

1. There is no known problem with using SiteKiosk Player in combination with Chrome Skins.
As general advice you should put the image files into the folder “…\SiteKiosk\Html” (or even a subfolder in “…\SiteKiosk\Html”) to make sure that the SiteKiosk user (used in “Auto Start” mode) can access them.

The SiteKiosk Player will always display pictures in original size. To display them in full screen the best way is to embed the image files into a HTML file.
e.g. like this (a separate html per image - example without further support):

<html>
<body style="margin:0px;">
<img src="picture.jpg" width="100%" height="100%" border="0">
</body>
</html>

Put the html file(s) into the same folder like the image file(s) and then choose the corresponding HTML file in SiteKiosk Player instead of the image file.

2. At “…\SiteKiosk\Skins\Windows_8\img\flags” you can copy & rename the file “3081.png” (flag of Australia) to “9.png” (which is actually the US flag).
