Support Request: Second shell launching

Description

Good morning,

We had a previous employee to the council who in his inexperience managed to break one of our Kiosk Machines. The issue we're having is that he uninstalled the software in a "botched" way should we say. So even though the software was uninstalled it still launches the SiteKiosk shell with the designated homepage on it at every startup.

Now when SiteKiosk is reinstalled and setup as we would like, the machine is starting up 2 instances of it. The "ghost" instance is uninteractable and can not be exited as there are no SiteKiosk commands etc. And the new freshly installed one which works fine but gets confused by the second one.

We would really like to get the second ghost instance removed but I have no idea where it is located, any assistance on the matter would be appriciated - I hope I have explained it enough.

Thanks,

Nick

Hello,

Thank you for submitting your inquiry and sorry to hear what happened to your kiosk. The start settings are stored in the registry, however we prefer that you try a complete uninstall first. Before you do that, please make copies of all of your files:

Start Screen C:\Users\Public\SiteKiosk\content
Media (Videos and images, etc) Content C:\Program Files (x86)\SiteKiosk\Html
Configuration: C:\Program Files (x86)\SiteKiosk\Config

To do a complete uninstall, go to add/remove programs in the Windows Settings, select SiteKiosk and choose "Modify" (not Uninstall) then choose the "Remove" radio button. Next check the box "Remove all created data" and proceed with the uninstall. This will remove all the SiteKiosk program files from your PC at which point you can reinstall.

Please let me know the outcome.

Best regards,
Andre.

Hi Andrea,

Unfortunatly that doesn't seem to have resolved the issue. The steps you have mentioned do allow me to remove the second "non broken" installation of SiteKiosk however apon reinstalling there are still 2 instances of the shell client opening.

What are these registry locations you speak of?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Thank you for giving it a try. Those details will be sent to your email. Before we go that route, can you also check that SiteKiosk was not started from somewhere else on your system (msconfig.exe, Task Scheduler)? Can you also tell the SiteKiosk version and build along with the OS Version? I would need also a description of the action of the second instance upon SiteKiosk Restricted User login.

Another thought about this issue, if you don't have any important data or software to lose or reinstall, you could Reset Windows10 in System Settings then reinstall SiteKiosk.
